Quilts of Valor – Accent block designs

There were several accent blocks in the quilt. Some were pieced some were applique. I wanted to do each block a little bit different. And frankly I didn’t decide what I was going to do with each block until I got to it.

The bird house block was REALLY hard to get a good picture. I did a heart meander in the background. On the bird house I sewed a circle where the hole should go, and sewed vertical lines to look like boards that would have made up a real house. I also put some feathers on the bird’s tail.

Bird house block - heart meanderFor the blue area of the flag, I just did some wavy echo lines of the star. And I did some feathers in the stripes.

Flag - echo and feathersThe apple got a simple meander in the background. For the apple itself I started in the middle with a circle and then did a wavy line spiraling out to look like a cabbage rose.

AppleThe tulip got swirls in the background and feathers in the red and green portions.

TulipThe tree was a lot of fun. I did a clam shell with a spike accent on the bottom to look like hills and grass. Then I did some loose swirls on the top to look like the wind. The tree itself received a trunk and some branches.

TreeMy favorite block though were the flowers. Pebbles and grass and wind in the background. The applique pieces were small enough I left them alone.
